The average person in the United States uses approximately 100 gallons of water per day, doing everything from flushing toilets and showering to washing dishes and clothes. In the City of Alexandria, the resulting dirty water is piped to AlexRenew for processing.
Our facility removes over 90% of the nitrogen and close to 100% of the phosphorus from the dirty water coming into our facility. Those nutrients are what fuel the growth of harmful algae blooms in our waterways.
We then produce clean water that can be reused on our site or put to beneficial use in our community. Since 2000, AlexRenew has operated an on-site reuse system. Annually, we reuse over 1.4 billion gallons of water a year for cooling, cleaning and optimizing our treatment process.
This water goes through additional ultraviolet (UV) disinfection before being returned to Hunting Creek and the Potomac River.
