The City of Alexandria and Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) have announced that the Commonwealth of Virginia plans to provide $25 million toward the “RiverRenew” community megaproject to remediate Alexandria’s combined sewer system. The General Assembly adopted the allocation as part of the state budget amendments for Fiscal Year 2020, which will be sent to the Governor for signature next month.
The Virginia General Assembly signaled it wants to award the city $25 million for the RiverRenew project, which will replace 200-year-old sewer lines in Old Town.
The call for nominations for the 11th Annual Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award is upon us!
The award is named in honor of Frances Ellen Pickering's lifelong dedication to preservation and conservation in the City of Alexandria. Mrs. Pickering was a long-time City activist who first gained recognition for her lobbying efforts more than 31 years ago that ultimately helped to create the Mount Vernon Trail between Alexandria and Washington, DC.

Formerly Alexandria’s Wet Weather Program, RiverRenew is a major initiative that will prevent millions of gallons of sewage mixed with rainwater from reaching Alexandria’s waterways.

In the findings, one message rang out loud and clear: Nearly every American (88% of respondents) thinks we need to invest in the nation's water infrastructure.
