The Alexandria Sanitation Authority is a respected environmental and industry leader in the region and is gaining greater national and international recognition. ASA not only uses the latest technology and processes, it maintains one of the most advanced water treatment facilities in the United States - and it sets the highest standard of performance in its practices and throughout its industry.
• ASA runs its equipment using one billion gallons of cleaned water to eliminate the need for potable water and leading the City's water sustainability and reuse efforts.
• ASA uses innovative technology, such as ultraviolet radiation, to reduce its use of chemicals to treat dirty water. This has an added bonus: it cuts the number of tractor-trailers delivering chemicals to ASA's facility. That's less traffic in Alexandria - and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
• ASA saves energy by cutting its natural gas usage by over 500,000 therms per year. It uses methane gas generated by solids processing to produce steam for heating and cooling. The savings is the equivalent of the natural gas used by almost 700 homes.
• ASA reduces greenhouse gas emissions by over 2,500 metric tons of CO2 annually - the same as taking 400 vehicles off the road each year.
• ASA uses renewable energy sources with the ultimate goal of being totally energy independent in the coming years.
• In 2008, ASA became the first water reclamation facility in Virginia and the 20th in the nation to be certified and admitted into the prestigious National Biosolids Partnership Environmental Management System.
• Each year, ASA hosted delegates from around the world who are interested in ASA's state-of-the-art water resource facility.
