Do you have these "water offenders" in your home?

A home should be a place of enjoyment for family and friends – and not a hideout for these common water offenders! Take a look to see if you’re harboring any of these “water fugitives!”

Clogged actuator

Every now and then, you might find that the water flow on a particular faucet is slower than usual. It isn’t always because of poor water pressure, especially if it’s just that one outlet. What’s likely the case is the actuator (i.e., the screen where the water comes out of the faucet) is clogged. Fortunately, this is a simple fix. Just use a pair pliers to remove the actuator from the faucet and clean the screen. Once you’re done, reassemble and enjoy your normal water flow!

“Flushable” wipes

Arguably our biggest “most wanted” water offender, flushable wipes are not actually flushable. Once flushed down the drain, they do not break up as advertised. They do, however, clog up pipes which then must be cleaned out to prevent service disruption. If you have small children and rely on these wipes, please dispose of them in the trash instead of the toilet.

Leaky toilet

Does your toilet run randomly? If so, you might have a leaky toilet. Diagnosing the problem is relatively simple. Get some food dye and put a few drops in the tank. Wait 15-20 minutes and see if the dye has made its way into the toilet bowl. If so, your flapper valve may need to be replaced (which is a relatively easy DIY plumbing job). Here’s a DIY article for how to tackle the job.

Expired medications

Old medications that have passed their expiration date need to be disposed of properly – and that’s definitely not down your toilet or thrown into the trash. Instead, you should take them to Drug Take Back Days or to your local pharmacy. You can also get rid of them by using a drug disposal kit.
