Alexandria Sanitation Authority cleans water...
The Alexandria Sanitation Authority (ASA) maintains one of the most advanced water treatment facilities in the United States. ASA is located in on a 35-acre site within walking distance of Old Town Alexandria in Northern Virginia.
for our customers
ASA serves about 350,000 people in the City of Alexandria and part of Fairfax County and processes on average 54 million gallons of wastewater per day – the equivalent of filling about 90 Olympic-sized swimming pools every day!
for the environment
Nutrients, mostly nitrogen, flow into the Bay and fuel the growth of algae blooms which absorb oxygen and kill aquatic life. Using technology that produces the highest quality water, ASA reduces the amount of nutrients that make their way into our Bay.
for a growing community
One of ASA’s most important challenges is meeting strict environmental regulations to remove more nutrients from wastewater before they flow into the watershed. To do so, ASA must upgrade its facilities. Currently in the planning stages, ASA’s upgrades will result in future facilities that are as “green” and efficient as possible – helping the community continue to thrive. This project is called SANUP, which stands for ASA’s State-of-the-Art Nitrogen Upgrade Program.
